Family friends have invited us to a party. The atmosphere is jolly and the people are lovely, but I’ll be honest (and an ignorant anti-social youth): I am not in the right mood to be socialising with a middle-aged crowd.
People may have noticed the reticent girl sitting alone; and the effort she did not make in her appearance or outfit for the evening: granny cardigan, spectacles, black flats, no make-up, chipped nails.
I am surrounded by statuesque women in heels and men in suits. The only decoration I have on is this:
