I was in a place where air was clean,
The hills bulbously green.
Soil copper red, sky light sweet blue,
Chinese whispers heard by a few.
Dry fish anyone?
Spectacles sliding down my nose and pounding headache sort of heat.
Princess Mononoke (Miyazaki)
Laputa Castle in the Sky (Miyazaki)
I was in a place that astonished and terrified me.
A pathway to a waterfall, guarded by the mightiest members of the earth, padded
Searching arms of blind ageless trees, half-conscious
One false footprint and an unheard brutal death befalls you, say the boulders that we pass on our way up, into an untouched
corner of the world.
Roughly translates as : Zhang River Forest Mountain Spring
Are the hills growing and will we be swallowed inside?
“Don’t go any further!” says my aunt to her 29-year old son.
I was in a place where the road fell between lotus farms and rice fields, and dragonflies whizzed about in clusters.
“Shall I go and pick a lotus for you?”
The landowner came out with a dog behind him.
My cousin started the engine.
It was a 2-hour mountain rafting adventure, a test to see if humans can submit to wild white-water currents and stay alive.
The raft overturned at one point but we saved ourselves.
Half of the trail was flat and almost current-less. We forgot about our existence and floated down like leaves fallen in the water, staring up at the sky from which the water dropped and at the mountains who forged these valleys.
Then we had to make an effort to paddle towards the end. We bumped against the sides to make the boat rock. We tried with frantic hands, then rubber shoes. Then we discovered that our helmets were most effective.
Worth coming if you wish to swim past farmers, dead ducks and lost slippers.
